Scan Samples

NO ICE WITH ICE
The two images above were scanned to JPEG from the same Ektachrome 35mm slide at 4000 dpi, the one at the left without ICE dust and scratch removal, the one at the right with ICE. The rresulting image resolution is 5211x3477. Use the zoom and pan functions of each to see details. The images below were scanned from the same slide (section outlined in red above) at various settings. The ONLY post processing done was to scale the 2000 dpi images by 2X to allow easier comparison and the conversion of the TIFF images to JPEG with minimum compression for display in web browsers which do not support TIFF. You can download the original TIFF images by clicking on them.

Note the lack of significant detail loss or jpeg artifacts in the JPEG scans as compared with the TIFFs. For most purposes the increased image size (55MB for TIFF vs 4MB for JPEG) is not worth the slight improvement. The other thing to notice is the very slight degradation of the image by hardware ICE processing. Considering the effectiveness of this processing (see the upper rigtht sky area in particular), this virtually unnoticeable reduction in detail is almost always worthwhile.
